Relationship between social support and depression in elderly people: A systematic review

Abstract
Objectives: Elderly people are becoming more socially isolated due to COVID-19 and long-term social isolation can lead to serious psychosocial problems. This study aimed to identify the relationship between social support and depression of the elderly, and research trends of recent studies through a systematic review.

Methods: "Older adults" AND "depression" AND "social support" was searched in the DBpia, KISS, and RISS, and "older adults" OR "elderly" AND "depression" AND "social support" AND "Korea" was searched in the EBSCO, PUBMED, and Web of science. The criteria for inclusion of the studies were 1) studies of the elderly in the community, 2) correlation studies on the impact of social support on depression. Excluded criteria were 1) studies on patients with certain diseases or surgery, 2) studies on the disabled and the elderly with dementia, 3) studies on the elderly with disasters and abuse, and 4) studies on the indirect effects of social support on depression. 30 studies were finally selected from 357 studies.

Results: A total of 12,555 people participated in the 30 studies, aged 60 or older. The most frequently used measurement tool for depression was GDSF-K, and the most frequently used measurement tool for social support was Social support scale(Park). 28 out of 30 studies have shown that social support plays an effective role in reducing depression. The most effective social support was emotional support, and social support was identified as the most positive factor from spouses and families.

Conclusion: This study provides evidence of the importance of emotional support and support from family and spouse for reducing depression in the elderly, and suggested policies to alleviate depression in the elderly by developing and implementing programs providing social support.
